Thrift Clearwing at Deep Point

Thrift Clearwing caught at Deep Point

What a stunning day! The sea was like glass and I stopped by at Old Town Bay to take a shot of the boats on the still water. Almost immediately I could hear the call of a BEE-EATER to my right and it sounded like it was around Old Town Church! Like Sunday, I could not see the bloody thing as it ncontinued to call. Nearby on the airfield, a plane started up and more cars drove past and I moved on as I could hear nothing but motors. This individual has been here now for over two weeks, which is a very long time for this species to stick around. It was heard over the observatory yesterday on St Agnes.
At Porth Hellick there were 2 Greenshank and the first returning Green Sandpiper.

Later in the day, I went up to Deep Point and with the net, swept across the grass and heather. After a good ten minutes, I looked into the net for the third time, to see what I had caught, and was pleasantly surprised to see a Thrift Clearwing! I have never seen a clearwing before and after being tipped off by Mick to search this area, I've been trying to catch one in the last few days and at last I was rewarded.

While I was taking this shot of the boats in Old Town Bay, all the time I could hear the BEE-EATER calling to my right near the church!

Thursday 30th June

A quick look on the dead pine walk, Garrison, found me looking at the bramble flowers that were covered in bees, when I saw a striking big hoverfly feeding on one of the flowers. Later Martin identified it as a Volucella Zonaria Hoverfly and showed me a female in his garden.

There were two moth traps working in Mick's garden and a new one for me was a beautiful Pine Tortrix.
