Yellow-legged Gull at Porthcressa

Found this adult Yellow-legged Gull at Porthcressa this afternoon

'Rocky Robin and I have only been back home on Scilly for a few days and early this afternoon we stopped off at Little Porth to look for the Black Redstart I had yesterday. While he was searching for the redstart, I had a quick scan at the small group of large gulls with me bins. Distant out on the rocks at Pilchard Pool and immediately found an adult Yellow-legged Gull.  925, Higgo and Jim were the first to twitch it and many more of the local birders caught up with it before it flew off south after thirty minutes.

There have only been a handfull of records of Yellow-legged Gull on Scilly this year

Also at Porthcressa were a 1st winter and 2 adult Common Gull

Just across on the otherside of town from Porthcressa is Town Beach and in the harbour showing well was the Red-breasted Merganser and further away, back for their third year, was the 2 Black-necked Grebe. All three were found while I was away in November.
Two day ago, Ren found a Red-throated Diver in the harbour and Higgo saw it yesterday off Gorse Cottage in The Roads. Later on 'Rocky' Robin and I scanned from McFarlands Down to try and see the Diver but instead we got the female Eider and 6 Great Northern Diver. However, we did get the Water Pipit at Porth Hellick Beach shortly afterwards with a single Firecrest near to the pool.

This 1st winter male Red-breasted Merganser showed well just off Town Beach

There were also up to 10 Teal on the pool and we heard at least 6 Water Rail
