Striped Hawkmoth at Longstones

Heavy rain overnight and this morning this Pectoral Sandpiper was pushed by high water levels up towards the hide at Lower Moors.

In the dull light, it moved closer to the hide and fell asleep

Late afternoon and Martin Goodey called to tell me that the Black-tailed Godwit that has been on the golf course up road, was at Lower Moors. Like the Pectoral Sandpiper earlier for the same reason, the godwit was directly in front of the hide and dense fog covered the islands throughout the day.

There were also these 2 Snipe preening at close range

The Pectoral Sandpiper is still at Porth Hellick with 3 Dunlin, 5 Green Sandpiper and 18 Teal. Despite the ideal weather conditions, no yanks arrived. However, in Cornwall, Graham Gorden found a Baird's Sandpiper on Marazion Beach. It was last year to almost the day that Graham found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the same beach. Two days later he arrived on Scilly and discovered a Cliff Swallow at Porth Hellick! Yes and I was sort of co-finder on the swallow!!! You can read the account here http://scillyspider.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/5th-cliff-swallow-for-scilly.html

No sign of the Red-backed Shrike that Jim trapped at Porth Hellick two days ago and instead I got this showy Tree Pipit

On the 31st August there was a fall of common migrants including some 300 Willow Warbler on St Mary's. Another 60 were on St Agnes.

With the odd Chiffchaff thrown in

Also had 3 Tree Pipit

And 3 Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat at Lower Moors. At Trewice Higgo and I had 1 Redstart, 3 Spotted and 2 Pied Flycatcher and 30+Willow Warbler. The day before, Higgo found a Common Rosefinch on Bryher.

I ain't seen a Striped Hawkmoth for a few years so it was good to see this individual that Mick trapped in his garden at Longstones last week

On the same night he also trapped this Convolvulus Hawkmoth

Also this European Corn Borer

And this Palpita vitrealis on Bobby 'Dazzler' Dawson jumper!
