First WAVED BLACK MOTH for Scilly

Graham Gorden on St Agnes found this first WAVED BLACK for both Cornwall and Scilly in his bedroom on the evening of 20th July!

There ain't been much goin on in the last month. Highlights have included an adult Roseate Tern at Porthcressa Bay  (13th) where there has also been up to 5 Mediterranean Gull. The Hooded Crow was still hanging on Hugh Towns rooftops until 15th. A Hobby was also on St Agnes.

Gentle SW yesterday got myself and Martin Goodey up to deep Point and from 17.30-19.30 we were rewarded with 40 Cory, 4 Sooty and single Balearic Shearwater and Puffin.

On the 7th there were 2 male Emperor Dragonflies together at Lower Moors.

Up to 5 Mediterranean Gull have been commuting with Porthcressa and Porthloo in the last week

The first Common sandpiper starting returning at the beginning of July with three birds on St Agnes. Today at Porth Hellick there were 8 Greenshank, 2 Redshank and a single Common Sandpiper

On the morning of 20th Graham let me know that he had 100's of Manx Shearwater between St Agnes and Annet. Mixed in with them were 3 Sooty and a single Balearic Shearwater. It wasn't til late afternoon that I made my way across from St Mary's and mid-way we hit a raft of 300-400 Manx Shearwater including up to 6 Sooty Shearwater. This is the first time I've observed Sooty Shearwater in between the islands. We ploughed right through the middle of them as they all took flight settling down again nearby. Unfortunately, Robin and I dipped out on the 3 juvenile Yellow-legged Gull that have been on St Agnes for the last few days but as usual got stuck into a cracking meal that Graham had cooked! Spot on mate!

Been a long time since I've observed a Sooty Shearwater up close and I had six of them in between St Mary's and St Agnes

A raft of 300-400 Manx Shearwater. In the last few days there has been large numbers of Manx Shearwater off Scilly included over 1000 off Bryher with 16 Sooty Shearwater also in the raft. Of the latter species this might be one of the highest numbers observed on Scilly.

Buff-tip Moth

last week a few us were invited to a game of five a-side on St Agnes. For those who have not visited Scilly for the last 100 years, the guy in the center with the beard is the ex-landlord of the Bishop, Bobby Hayes! Great evening!

Robin thinks what the hell are you doin to that pasta? He looks on in a strange and worried way as he observes Graham meditating to his pasta.

After 30 minutes of meditating or was it an hour? Graham offers Robin the plate of pasta. I'm sure I heard Robin mutter under his breath 'You can stick it where the sun don't shine!'
