5 Siberian 'type' Chiffchaff

However, this is a Siberian Chiffchaff, because we both heard it call

   I spent most of the day with Ren today. The first Siberian 'type' Chiffchaff we had was at the Dump Clump, where there was a Yellow-browed Warbler (heard only). At Lower Moors, there were at least 3 Siberian 'type' Chiffchaff, 15+Chiffchaff, 10+Goldcrest, 1 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Brambling and 1 Woodcock. It was only when we got to Higher Moors that I could hear a Siberian Chiffchaff and we soon located it in the Sallows calling on and off. All the other 4 birds that we observed earlier, all looked very like the bird above. Mid-morning I observed 13 Blackbirds fly off high out to sea, NNE, from Star Castle

2 of the 3 Siberian 'type' Chiffchaff at Lower Moors. Non of these birds were heard.

Nearby at Porth Hellick the 6 juvenile Greenland White-fronted Geese were still present

 

 

 

 

 

 

Higgo called me yesterday morning to tell me that he had 3 WAXWING on the wires at Maypole. Martin relocated them feeding on berries in a garden. 5 minutes before I saw these birds, I had a sinlge also at Parsons Field

 

 

 

Also yesterday there were large numbers of winter thrushes on the island

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At Green Farm these two were play fighting and causing havoc among the thrushes and the flock of 250-300 Chaffinch which only held 3 Brambling.

 

There were 5 Crossbill, 4 Siskin and over 150 Chaffinch at Content

 

Higgo was rushed to Treliske Hospital, Truro, this afternoon. We all wish him a speedy recovery and I hope to be in the field with him very soon. You take care mate!

More WAXWINGS in!

Up to 6 WAXWING were in the Sallyport area

  Mid-morning and I was vtalking to Martin outside the Coop, when Ren called to say that he had 2 WAXWING in front of his bedroom window at Sallyport. I rushed up there and found 3 birds feeding in a Holly Bush. They stuck around for 10 minutes and headed off low just around the corner. When I relocated them, there was 4 WAXWING! By now more birders were arriving and all 4 birds showed at very close range in the Sallyport area.

 

 

 

In the morning sun, they looked superb

Unfortanly the Chough was picked up dead this morning on Peninnis by the lighthouse. It looks like crows have killed it by the battered head.

 

 

 

One of the 1st winter female Ring-necked Ducks must of had a ding-dong with the other 2 Ring-necks on Tresco Great Pool and decided to return to the safety of Porth Hellick

 

 

There have been up to 11 Whooper Swan at Porth Hellick for 12 days now. A few days later they were joined by 6 Greenland White-fronted Geese

 

 

 

This Red-throated Diver spent two days, 31/10-1/11, showing very well just off shore at Town Beach Looking over Mr Freestone's shoulder

 

 

 

While this freshly dead adult Great Northern diver was found by Ren on Porthcressa Beach

2 WAXWING at old Town Church

 

1st winter male WAXWING at Old Town Church

  Mid-morning and Ren was coming out from Old Town Church when he heard the sound of a WAXWING in the area. He got on to it fying from Nowhere and into the churchyard. However, he had to move on and let Martin and myself no about it. When I arrived at the churchyard, I could hear the damn thing, but could I see it. Then on the pager it came out that 2 WAXWING could be seen from the Peninnis trail looking towards Old Town Church. It was some 20 minutes later until I got onto them feeding on blackberries. Later 3 birds turned  up on the Garrison and 2 or the same were at Watermill. A single was seen yesterday on St Agnes.
