Early Yellow-browed Warbler at Higher Moors

The second earliest record of a Yellow-browed Warbler on Scilly by one day was at Higher Moors.

Over night heavy rain and the following morning there was an obvious increase in birds. At first light, Kevin Cade found a dead Spotted Crake on Trench Lane. Shortly afterwards he got a Wryneck at the west end of Old Town Bay followed by the second earliest arrival date of Yellow-browed Warbler that was at Higher Moors. The latter species, I managed to see with a single Pied Flycatcher and 10+Willow Warbler and as I was just leaving, when it started to call. After my personal record of 12 Yellow Wagtail two days ago at Salkee, I went and found 20 at Pelistry with 23 Wheatear! Feeding with them was the interesting grey and white wagtail that I had Salkee. Darren Mason contacted me to say he had a Wryneck at Deep Point Quarry and 60 Wheatear in the area. I very briefly saw the Wryneck, but in the Giants Castle/airfield area, I got over 80 Wheatear, 24 Meadow Pipit, 30+alba Wagail, 5 whinchat, male and female Merlin. Another text, this time from John Headon and he had briefly a Pectoral Sandpiper join the juvenile, that turned up yesterday, at Porth Hellick. Later, it was discovered that it had been at Lower Moors before showing at Porth Hellick with 2 Green Sandpiper.  Elsewhere I got 4 Spotted and another Pied Flycatcher.

This dead juvenile Spotted Crake was found on Trench road in fronts of Nigel Hudsons house

I relocated the interesting wagtail with 19 Yellow Wagtail at Pelistry that I had two days ago at Salkee. Note the necklace and white throat in the front on shots and in the bottom pic, the darker upperparts, darker centers on the greater coverts and darker tertails compared to the wagtail it's feeding with. Also the wing bars seem to appear broader. Any comments welcome

Over 300 Wheatear were on St Mary's including over 130 at Deep Point/Porth Hellick Down area with another 50+, St Martins and 20+, St Agnes. Also 100+Meadow Pipit were at Deep Point.

Paul St Perrier turned up a juvenile Red-backed Shrike at the campsite area with 6 Whinchat on Bryher where the Icterene Warbler was refound at Popplestones. On St Agnes, Bob Dawson kept his run of finding rare birds with a Barred Warbler in the Chapel Fields. A Wryneck was also on St Martins at Little Arthur Farm.

Pectoral Sandpiper at Porth Hellick

The third Pectoral Sandpiper this autumn was this juvenile at Porth Hellick

Just after 13.00, I got a call from Robin telling me that he had a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper at Porth Hellick. I contacted everyone and within minutes I was watching it in front of the Sussex Hide. Two visitors first saw it and thought it was a Jack Snipe. They put Robin on to it and re-identified it as a Canada Goose! Well it is brown with white underparts. I guess it's got a longer neck and is slightly bigger and could eat a Pectoral Sandpiper whole! Maybe two at the same time!
On The Garrison there were only a single Reed Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff and 2 Spotted Flycatcher and I observed 14 Siskin fly south towards St Agnes. Elsewhere of note I got 2 Whinchat, 1 Pied and 8 Spotted Flycatcher, 6 Willow Warbler, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Grey and 14 White  Wagtail.

Juvenile Canada Goose!

Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher

Yesterday in the Salakee fields I got 12 Yellow Wagtail. Before this, 9 was the largest number that I had ever seen on Scilly. Note that the last three pics show a cold looking individual with a long prominent superciluim. Possibly showing some eastern origins? I did hear one of the wagtails give a buzz 'type' call twice, but the bird was out of sight when I heard it. Any comments welcome.

Still seeing Clouded Yellows around

In the last few days there has been a lot of common migrants arriving on the off islands and today there was a Redstart on Bryher and a Wryneck and flyover Garganey on St Martins. On the 9th Paul St Perrier was having a good run with  a Corncrake, Icterene Warbler and 2 Wryneck on Bryher and 28 Siskin on Tresco. The following day on St Agnes, Bob Dawson was looking to have a BBQ on the beach at Porth Goose and stubbled on to a Ortolan Bunting! Also Will Scott had a Wryneck at Bants Carn, St Mary's.

Paddyfield warbler on St Agnes

The Western Bonelli's Warbler in the pine belt at sandy Lanes, was last seen on the 24th August Will scott

This afternoon, I was just watching a Siskin flying over, when Bob Dawson called to say that he had just found a PADDYFIELD WARBLER at the east end of the campsite, St Agnes. I called everyone and Robin, Higgo, 925 and I dipped on the damn thing! We also just missed out on a Wryneck in the same area. The only birds of note were 23 alba wagtail and a single Snipe and Teal. Also today there were a Spotted Redshank, Pectoral Sandpiper and Ruff on Tresco abbey Pool.

Yesterday, there was a touch of east in the wind and as a result there were a sprinkling of common migrants in. In the hot sun, I only had time to do a few sites and totals included, 1 Garden Warbler, 4 Siskin,3 Whinchat, 7 Spotted Flycatcher, 5 Tree Pipit, 3 Whitethroat, 5 Wheatear, 7 alba and 2 Yellow Wagtail, 20+Chiffchaff, 12 Willow Warbler, 30+Blackcap, 3 Kestrel and 1 Merlin.
Elsewhere, a Wryneck was found on Peninnis and Paul St Pierre turned up 2 juvenile Rose-coloured Starling on Bryher.

I saw over 30 Blackcap yesterday including this female who was busy feeding on Blackberries

One of the 2 Whitethroat that were together at Carn Friars

Got 7 spotted Flycatcher altogether

I had 2 Whinchat on The Garrison and this single at Lower Moors

This Chiffchaff was picking off black aphids

Small numbers of Willow Warbler around

Only found 5 Wheatear

Both Linnet and Greenfinch are starting to build up in numbers

On the St Agnes last week there were 2 each of Barred Warbler and Wryneck. Last week on the 30th, I was playing 6 A-side Football when I observed a wader flying low just over the pine belt to the west and could see that it was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper when it came closer. It came down lower and seemed as though it was going to land on the pitch, but instead it started to climb and flew off west towards Peninnis where I lost it. Anyways, the ball was coming my way! The following day, there was sign of the sandpiper, but a Pectoral Sandpiper was on Tresco abbey Pool. I've had some good birds while playing football in the past. 2 Osprey, Short-toed Lark, in May this year, the Common Crane and a Ruff.

This female Great Green Bush Cricket was at the airfield

 Small Tortoiseshell

Last Sunday, it was the annual 6 A-side competition on The Garrison. We were no where near the favorites to win. However, we were knocked out by two goals to nil in the quarter finals. The Heroes won the cup that we drew with, 1-1 in our first match in the knock out round and I scored in that game. We all had a great time and I'm looking forward to playing with the birders against the islanders next month.

Come and take the ball off me if you dare?

And this is what we were all playing for..

..and in 2006, my team 'Scilly Spiders' won the 6 A-side cup! We also won it in 1998!

And a cute looking Rabbit was observing in what was going on

Last Tuesday, while gazing at this stunning sunset looking from my digs towards Samson, both Pablo and Peter flew over taking their first flight lesson. They were up in the air for a while, but just before dark, they returned home and went to sleep in their pool. now they're making regular flights and becoming quite famous on the island
